Natural Cough Remedies

It's that time of the year... germ season is upon us! And with all these seasonal threats in the air, keeping the guard up and being proactive about supporting the immune system during this season is key to reducing the chances of getting sick.

So while everyone seems to be dropping like flies, I really like to maximize my use of the dōTERRA OnGuard line because I know it's always that line between getting sick or not, and if I do get sick, then the length is always shorter if my immune's system strong. I can't tell you how much more I used to get sick before dōTERRA came into my life, and now a days I maybe get sick once a year. Therefore, prevention is key and for me it starts with diffusing OnGuard constantly- at home, in my office and in my car (car diffusers are life changing btw!). I will also wash my hands constantly with the OnGuard foaming hand soap, and when out in public I'll spray them with the OnGuard Sanitizing Spray after touching door handles, shopping carts or shaking people's hands. I will oil up topically (a few drops of the OnGuard oil or the roller along the spine and on the bottoms of my feet 2-3 times a day) and internally (capsules and beadlets are the most convenient for internal support) 1 to 2 times a day, and I'll suck on the OnGuard protecting throat drops/lozenges throughout the day. You can find all these prevention items HERE. I also like to up my water intake to increase the flush out, and get my hands on some elderberry syrup as it's a good source of vitamin C and it's been long known to be a home remedy to prevent and shorten the symptoms of colds and flus.

If you do end up getting sick and you start feeling that scratchy throat coming on despite prevention measures, it's not the end of the world. There are natural ways to treat your symptoms that will have you back feeling better in no time.

It's super important that you keep supporting your immune system throughout the length of your symptoms to ensure you kick whatever bug you've got to the curb ASAP.

Here's two of my favorite easy to make and all-natural cough remedies-

Scratchy Throat Spray

You'll need:

  • 2 drops Cardamom

  • 2 drops Lemon

  • 2 drops Thyme

  • 4 drops OnGuard

  • 2 drops Clove⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Mix these oils in a 2oz glass spray bottle (these are my favorite in etched glass), fill the rest with distilled water, and shake and spray as needed directly on throat.

Cough-Suppressant / Throat-Coating Cough Syrup

You'll need:

8 drops Peppermint⁣ 8 drops Lavender⁣ 8 drops Lemon⁣ 8 drops Frankincense ⁣ 4 drops Cardamom⁣ 3 drops Clove⁣ 3 drops Wild Orange⁣ 3 drops Cinnamon Bark⁣ 1/2 cup of Raw Organic Honey ⁣ ⠀⠀⁣ Directions:⁣

1. Warm up the honey for a few seconds in the microwave in a microwave safe jar or bowl.

2. Mix in the oils⁣.

3. Mix well!! (Do this every time before you take it as the oils separate to the top of the honey)⁣

4. Take one spoonful every 3 to 4 hours. If cough is thick and persistent take every 2 to 3 hours instead.

Why I Love It

This cough syrup is a serious a life saver and such an amazing alternative to the "medicated" syrups you find over the counter, not to mention organic! The peppermint in it helps open up the chest airways, the cardamom supports the body to naturally express the phlegms out and the honey is an amazing cough remedy... all medicine given to us by nature. How powerful is that!?
